Joint media release from Singapore Pools and Singapore Sports Council
Since the official opening on 21 July 1973, the National Stadium has been tirelessly serving the people of Singapore. Time has come for it to close its doors to make way for the new Sports Hub. On Saturday, 30 June 2007, the National Stadium will have its final merriment.
In a pertinent tribute to the Grand Old Dame, iSHINE, Singapore Pools staff community programme, in partnership with the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), brings you the National Stadium Commemorative Mug to keep alive the warm memories of colourful moments of the National Stadium in our hearts.
When warm water is poured into this mug, the message on the mug will gradually change to reveal a vibrant picture of a National Day parade at the stadium. This unique mug is priced at $12 and will be sold at all Singapore Pools outlets and its authorised retailers, and selected SSC facilities. The mugs will also be sold at selected sports events and locations.
Only 20,000 pieces of this collector’s item were produced for this special occasion. Proceeds from the sales of this unique mug will go toward the President’s Challenge 2007. iSHINE and the SSC intend to raise $150,000 for the President’s Challenge through this effort.
The National Stadium’s closure is a significant milestone not only for the SSC, but also for Singapore Pools. Ms Juliana Lim, Director of Public Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility explains. “The National Stadium holds a very important role in the history of Singapore Pools. She was our reason for being in the first few years of our existence.”
Established in 1968, Singapore Pools was tasked with the dual objective of combating illegal operators by offering the people a legal avenue to bet as well as channelling the revenues from gaming toward community purpose and benefit. The National Stadium was the very first community project for Singapore Pools. The sales of Sweep and Toto tickets contributed over $14.5m to the construction of the stadium, giving Singaporeans 34 years of wonderful memories.
“We felt it would be meaningful to commemorate the National Stadium,” continued Ms Lim. “what better way to do so then to initiate a project with the SSC that combines three of Singapore Pools core objectives – Charity, Sports and Community Involvement.”
Singapore Pools has been the challenge sponsor of the President’s Challenge since inception. We have also been a staunch supporter in the sports scene, contributing toward football development and sports excellence through the multi million-dollar award programme amongst other sponsorships. The most direct link toward community involvement would be through Singapore Pools staff community programme, iSHINE. This programme is not just about monetary contributions, but a staff volunteer programme where employees give their time, effort and passion.
Since all proceeds from the sales of the mugs goes toward the President’s Challenge 2007, all three elements of Charity, Sports and Community Involvement are combined seamlessly.
Concluded Mr Patrick Lee, Chief Knowledge Officer and Chairman of the National Stadium Closure Organising Committee added, “ This is one of the special activities in our series of events leading to the closure. We are happy to merchandise this special mug with Singapore Pools that enables Singaporeans to remember the National Stadium while contributing to a noble cause of raising funds for the President’s Challenge.”
